About this tool
The square root of x is the number that gives x when multiplied by itself, so √144 = 12. A radical can often be simplified by taking out square factors: √72 = √(36 × 2) = 6√2.
Negative numbers have no real square root; the answer is imaginary, which the tool tells you. Odd roots of negative numbers do exist: the cube root of −8 is −2.
